Profile & Team

How to set up your lister profile, what customers see on your public page, and how to create, publish and run a team.

In short

  • Edit your public profile under Lister Profile. It's a short wizard: Basic info, Images, Specialties, Fees, Website & social media and Contact.
  • Your handle is your profile address (/listers/your-handle), and a team's handle is its page address (/listers/teams/team-handle). Changing a handle changes the address.
  • Your website and social media go in the Website & social media step. Phone, WhatsApp and email come from the contact profile you pick in the Contact step.
  • A team has one owner: the person who created it. Only the owner (or our admins) can edit the team profile, fees and office location, publish the team page, manage members, and edit or delete the team's contact profiles.
  • Teams are for listers. With a customer account, Create Team takes you to the upgrade first.
  • Members can still see everything: Team Profile shows them the team's business details read-only, and Team Members shows who's in the team.
  • New teams are private. The owner publishes the team page from the Visibility step of the team profile.

Your lister profile

Once your account is a lister account, open Lister Profile from the sidebar (under Profiles) or from your account menu, or go to /listers/public-profile/edit. If you haven't upgraded yet, the page shows an Upgrade Now banner; see Getting started.

The wizard has six steps (members, who have no public page, get Basic info, Images, Specialties and Contact). You can move between them with the step tabs at the top, Next and Previous. Nothing is saved until you choose Save Profile on the last step, which then takes you to your dashboard.

  1. Basic info: Full Name (required), Nickname (optional, shown under your name), Public Handle (required, see below) and Professional Bio (up to 1,000 characters).
  2. Images: a profile photo and a cover image. Photos must be JPEG, PNG, WebP or AVIF, up to 10 MB. The profile photo is square, at least 300×300 pixels; the cover image is 16:9, at least 1024×576 pixels (1200×675 recommended). You crop each one in the browser before it's uploaded.
  3. Specialties: the kinds of property and areas you know best, such as "Westlands apartments". Press Enter or type a comma after each one; pasting a comma-separated list adds them all. These are yours alone: they show on your page and your card in the Listers directory, and don't change your teams' specialties (the team owner sets those in the team profile).
  4. Fees: what you charge customers for viewings, virtual tours or anything else (up to 8 fees). See Customer fees.
  5. Website & social media: your website and your Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, TikTok and YouTube accounts (see below).
  6. Contact: choose the contact profile customers use to reach you (see below).

Your profile photo is the same photo used across your account, so changing it here also changes it in Account settings, and the other way round.

Your handle and profile address

Your handle makes your public address: https://maskaniyetu.com/listers/your-handle. It must be:

  • 3 to 30 characters;
  • lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens only, not starting or ending with a hyphen;
  • not already used by someone else, and not one of the words our own pages use (teams, individuals or public-profile).

As you type, the field checks the handle and shows Available., This handle is already taken. or a format hint. You can change your handle at any time, but links that use the old one stop working and aren't redirected. The editor warns you when you change it, so update your business cards and social posts when you do. Listers without a handle don't appear in the Listers directory. That page shows a few teams and a few individual listers, each with a link to the full list: Teams or Individual listers. Every lister with a handle is listed under Individual listers, including team members. Each card shows the year you joined Maskani Yetu.

How customers contact you

You don't type phone numbers into the lister profile. Instead, in the Contact step you search for and pick a contact profile: a saved set of phone numbers, WhatsApp numbers and email addresses that you can reuse on your profile and your listings. Websites and social media aren't part of a contact profile; they go in the Website & social media step. You can pick one of your own contact profiles or one belonging to your current team.

To create or edit one, open Contact Profiles (sidebar, under Profiles) in a new tab, then come back and search for it. Your wizard progress isn't lost.

A contact profile is either yours (Personal (My Profile)) or a team's (Team Profile). You edit and delete your own. Any lister in a team can create a team contact profile and use the team's profiles on their profile and listings, but only the team owner (or our admins) can edit or delete them, because they decide where the whole team's enquiries go. Other members see Managed by the team owner in place of Edit and Delete. A profile that's on a listing can't be deleted until each listing uses another one.

  • The Message button on your page opens WhatsApp using the WhatsApp number in your contact profile.
  • The Call button uses the phone number you gave when you upgraded to a lister account, or the phone number in your contact profile if you didn't give one.
  • With no phone or WhatsApp number at all, your page shows a Contact button instead. It opens your contact profile's email if there is one; otherwise it lists your listings so customers can send an enquiry from one of them.
  • In a contact profile, each phone number, WhatsApp number and email address is checked as you save, and you can mark one of each kind as primary. Same as my phone copies your phone number into WhatsApp.

Listers and teams set these the same way: in the Website & social media step of the lister profile wizard or the team profile editor. There's one field each for your website and your Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, TikTok and YouTube accounts.

  • Paste the full link, or just the handle, such as @yourname. A handle becomes the right address for that platform.
  • Each field only takes a link for its own platform. If you paste, say, an Instagram link into the YouTube field, the field tells you which platform it belongs to. A website field won't take a social media link either.
  • Only web addresses (http:// or https://) are accepted.
  • Leave a field blank if you don't use that platform. Clearing a field removes the link when you save.

Your links appear under Find them online in the About section of your page, and on your listings when a listing shows contact details directly (a team listing shows the team's links). Every link opens a You're leaving Maskani Yetu page first, which shows where it goes, with Continue and Back.

Your public profile page

Your page is public as soon as you have a lister account and a handle. Use View public profile at the top of the wizard to open it. It's one scrolling page with a menu to jump between sections:

  • Header: photo, cover image, name and nickname, a verified badge if we've verified you, your rating, any review badges, your number of active listings and the year you joined, plus Call and Message (or Contact, see above) and a Share button. The ⋯ menu holds Write a review and Report. On phones, the contact buttons also stay pinned to the bottom of the screen.
  • What you'll pay: your fees and fee notes. If you haven't listed any, customers see "No viewing fees listed — agree on any fees in writing before paying."
  • About: your bio, plus your website and social media under Find them online.
  • Properties: up to six active listings, with a link to all of them. This includes listings by other members of your teams.
  • Reviews: a score panel (average, reviews per star, how many are from verified visits, and the share you've replied to) and the reviews themselves, newest first. Customers can click a star row to see only those reviews. Each review names the listing it's about. Because every review belongs to a listing, Write a review first asks the customer which of your listings they viewed or stayed at; listings they toured are listed first. You and your team members don't see this button on your own pages. See Reviews & ratings.

Teams: how they work

A team is an agency or group of listers working under one name. A team has:

  • its own public page (once published) at https://maskaniyetu.com/listers/teams/team-handle, listed under Teams in the Listers directory;
  • its own fees, office location, description, website and social media;
  • its own listings: a listing belongs to the team that was selected in the team menu when you created it;
  • one owner, the person who created it, and any number of members.

Every account also has a personal space for listings that aren't part of any team. Switch between your personal space (Personal) and your teams from the team menu at the top of the dashboard (under Switch Context). The team you're in decides which team a new listing goes to and which team Team Profile opens.

Creating a team

  1. Open the team menu at the top of the dashboard and choose Create Team (on phones it's in the main menu), or go to /teams/create. Teams are for listers: with a customer account you're taken to the upgrade to a lister account instead, with "Teams are for listers. Upgrade your account to create one." Upgrade, then come back to create the team.
  2. Enter the Team Name. You add the photo and everything else on the team profile next.
  3. Choose Create.

You become the team's owner and its first member (you count towards the team's rating and appear in its member list), the new team becomes your current team, and you're taken straight to its team profile with "Team created. Fill in your profile, then publish it from the Visibility step." The team's web address is made from its name when you create it and doesn't change if you rename the team later. The team page stays private until you publish it.

Editing the team profile

Select the team in the team menu, then open Team Profile (sidebar, under Profiles, or Profile under Team; or the account menu) or Edit Team Profile (team menu), or go to /listers/teams/manage. Only the team owner can edit. Changes are saved when you choose Save Changes on the last step.

Members who open Team Profile get a read-only view instead (https://maskaniyetu.com/teams/team-handle/profile): logo and cover, whether the page is published, the owner, the number of members, and the business details customers see (about, service areas, specialties, office location, fees, website and social media), with View public page once it's published. To change something, ask the owner.

  1. Basic info: Team Name (required), Public Handle (required, see below), About (up to 1,000 characters: who the team is, what it stands for, how it works), and the optional Office location. Choose Office location to open it (it's already open if you saved an office before), then add an office address and an optional map pin. Use Find a neighbourhood or landmark to move the map to your area, then click the map or drag the marker to place the pin. You can also choose Use my location, or Enter coordinates or paste a map link to paste coordinates or a full Google Maps or OpenStreetMap link (how it works). Remove pin clears it. The pin must be inside Kenya.
  2. Images: the team's profile photo and cover image (same rules as your own).
  3. Specialties: Service Areas (Add area) and Team Specialties (Add specialty).
  4. Fees: the fees customers pay the team. See Customer fees.
  5. Website & social media: the team's website and accounts, entered the same way as a lister's (see Website and social media).
  6. Visibility: publish or unpublish the team page.

The team's handle

The Public Handle sets the team page's address: https://maskaniyetu.com/listers/teams/team-handle. A new team gets one made from its name; the owner can change it on the Basic info step. It follows the same rules as your own handle (3 to 30 characters, lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens), must not be used by another team, and can't be manage or create. The field checks it as you type. A team handle made before this field existed can be longer; it keeps working until you change it. Old links to the team page stop working when the handle changes and aren't redirected, and the editor warns you before you save.

Publishing your team page

On the Visibility step, choose Publish. The page goes live, appears under Teams in the Listers directory, and the step shows its address. Choose Unpublish to take it down again. While a team page is unpublished, only the team's own members can open it; everyone else gets "page not found".

Inviting and managing members

Open Team Settings from the team menu or Settings under Team in the sidebar (https://maskaniyetu.com/teams/team-handle). Only the owner (and our admins) can manage the team here. Members see the same page as Team Members: the member list, a link to the team profile and a Leave button on their own row. Name, photo, fees and the rest of the business details aren't here: they're on the team profile, linked at the top of the page. For the owner it has two tabs:

  • Members: invite people, see pending invitations and current members, and remove members.
  • Delete team: permanently delete the team, its team page and its contact profiles. Its listings stay with the members who created them and are only taken off the team. While a listing still uses one of the team's contact profiles, the team can't be deleted: choose another contact profile on that listing first. Your personal space can't be deleted.

Inviting someone

  1. On the Members tab, under Add Team Member, enter their email address. Everyone you invite joins as a member.
  2. Choose Add. They're emailed an invitation, and it appears under Pending Team Invitations, where you can Cancel it.
  3. They need a Maskani Yetu account with that same email address. Signed in, they choose Accept invitation in the email and see "Great! You have accepted the invitation to join the … team."

The member list puts the owner first. Each person has an Owner or Member badge, how many listings they have in the team, when they joined and a link to their lister page; your own row is marked (You). The owner also sees everyone's email address. Owner rights can't be handed to someone else, and the owner can't leave or be removed.

What members can do

  • Add listings to the team by selecting it in the team menu before creating the listing.
  • See and handle enquiries and tour requests for the team's listings while the team is selected in the team menu (see Managing submissions).
  • Appear in the Members section of the team page, and their reviews count towards the team's rating.

Members can't edit the team profile, fees, office location or members, can't edit or delete the team's contact profiles (they can still create one and use them on their listings), and can't publish the team page. A member who is removed keeps their own account and lister profile.

Your public team page

Like your lister page, the team page is one scrolling page:

  • Header: logo, cover, name, team rating, number of members and active listings, and a Contact team button. It lists the team's own contact profiles first (call, WhatsApp and email), then each member who has a phone, WhatsApp number or email. If there are none, it lists the team's listings so customers can enquire from one. Write a review offers the listings attached to the team.
  • What you'll pay: the team's fees.
  • About: the team's About text, service areas, specialties, and the team's website and social media.
  • Office: only when the office has a map pin. Shows the address, a map and Get directions. With an address but no pin, the address appears in the header instead.
  • Properties: the team's listings, with a link to all of them. A member's own listings that were never added to the team are not shown.
  • Reviews: reviews of all members, with the same score panel as a lister page.
  • Members: each member with a link to their lister page.

Account settings

Account Settings in your account menu (/user/profile) is for your sign-in details, not your public page. It has tabs:

  • Profile: photo (Select A New Photo, Remove Photo), name and email.
  • Security: update your password, two-factor authentication, and signing out of other browser sessions.
  • Connected account: connect or disconnect one social sign-in, such as Google, so you can sign in without a password.
  • Delete account: permanently delete your account. An account that has listings, including deleted ones, can't be deleted here; contact us to close it.

The Edit Lister Profile button at the top takes you to the lister profile wizard.

Common questions

I changed my handle and my old link is broken.

That's expected: the handle is the address. Share the new link, or change the handle back if it's still free.

I changed the team's handle and the old team link is broken.

Same as for your own handle: the handle is the address. Share the new link, or change it back if no other team has taken it.

Why isn't my team in the Listers directory?

It isn't published yet. The owner publishes it on the Visibility step of the team profile.

Why can't I edit my team's fees?

Only the team owner can. Members see the fees read-only on Team Profile; our admins see them read-only in the editor with the message "Only team owners can change fees."

Why can't I edit my team's contact profile?

A team contact profile decides where the whole team's calls, WhatsApp messages and enquiry emails go, so only the team owner can edit or delete it. You can still use it on your listings, or create your own and pick that instead. Ask the owner to change the team's.

Why don't I see Edit business details on the team profile?

The team profile edits your current team. Switch to that team in the team menu first.
